The Office
The Office premiered on NBC in March 2005 as an American adaptation of the British series of the same name created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, and it followed a documentary-crew mockumentary format centered on the mundane daily lives of employees at the fictional Dunder Mifflin paper company. The American version, developed by Greg Daniels, gradually diverged from its darker British source material into a warmer, more optimistic tone centered on Steve Carell's performance as regional manager Michael Scott, a shift that helped it build a devoted audience across nine seasons. The show experienced a remarkable second life through streaming, becoming one of the most-watched series on Netflix years after its original broadcast run ended, driven significantly by a generation of viewers discovering or rewatching it well after its 2013 finale. The Office's combination of its successful transformation from a British source format into a distinctly American workplace comedy and its outsized streaming-era popularity has made it one of the most enduringly beloved sitcoms of the 21st century.
VS
Friends
Friends premiered on NBC in September 1994, created by David Crane and Marta Kauffman, following six friends navigating relationships and careers in New York City, and it became one of the most commercially successful and widely syndicated sitcoms in television history across its ten-season run. The show's ensemble cast negotiated a famous unified salary deal during its later seasons, with all six main actors eventually earning $1 million per episode each, a groundbreaking demonstration of collective bargaining power among an ensemble cast that reshaped how subsequent hit shows approached similar negotiations. Friends achieved a massive second life on streaming platforms decades after its original run, with Netflix and later Max paying enormous licensing fees to retain streaming rights, reflecting the show's sustained, multi-generational popularity long after its original 2004 finale. Friends's combination of its historically significant ensemble cast salary negotiations and its sustained multi-decade streaming popularity has made it one of the most commercially significant sitcoms in television history.
