The Platters
The Platters became one of the most commercially successful vocal groups of the 1950s, and their 1955 hit "Only You (And You Alone)" helped establish doo-wop's crossover appeal into mainstream pop radio at a time when the genre had primarily circulated within Black American vocal group traditions. Their 1958 song "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," originally a 1933 show tune, demonstrated the group's ability to reinterpret older popular standards through doo-wop's characteristic vocal harmony style, broadening the genre's material beyond newly written songs. Lead vocalist Tony Williams's distinctive tenor voice became the group's signature sound, and The Platters' combination of polished vocal harmony and their crossover pop success made them one of the first doo-wop groups to achieve sustained mainstream commercial dominance across a broad, racially mixed listening audience. The Platters' combination of genuine crossover commercial success and their sustained string of hit singles throughout the mid-to-late 1950s has made them one of the most commercially significant vocal groups of doo-wop's original commercial era.
VS
Dion and the Belmonts
Dion and the Belmonts, formed by singer Dion DiMucci and named for Belmont Avenue in his Bronx neighborhood, blended doo-wop harmony with a rock and roll edge, and their 1959 hit "A Teenager in Love" became one of the definitive songs of doo-wop's late-1950s commercial peak. Dion was scheduled to be on the same fatal 1959 flight that killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper, but he declined a seat due to the cost, a decision that, like Waylon Jennings's own near-miss on the same flight, became a significant and sobering part of his personal history. Dion's subsequent solo career, including hits like "Runaround Sue" and "The Wanderer," established him as one of the few doo-wop-era vocal group frontmen to achieve major sustained solo stardom after leaving his original group, reflecting his genuine individual vocal star power. The group's combination of their Bronx Italian-American vocal group identity and Dion's subsequent significant solo career has made Dion and the Belmonts one of the most historically significant white doo-wop acts of the genre's original commercial era, which had otherwise developed primarily within Black vocal group traditions.
