The Sound of Music
The Sound of Music, released in 1965 and based on the real story of the Austrian von Trapp family, became one of the highest-grossing films of all time at the point of its release, and its filming locations across Salzburg, Austria remain major tourist attractions built substantially around the film's continued popularity. Julie Andrews's performance as Maria, a postulant nun who becomes governess to a widowed naval officer's seven children, won her widespread acclaim, and the film's songs, including "Do-Re-Mi" and "Edelweiss," became some of the most widely recognized musical theater songs ever adapted for film. The film's backdrop, set against the rising threat of Nazi annexation of Austria in the years just before World War II, gave its otherwise lighthearted family musical narrative a serious historical weight, culminating in the von Trapp family's dramatic escape over the Alps to avoid Nazi conscription. Its enduring popularity, including annual televised broadcasts and sing-along theatrical screenings that continue decades after its original release, has made The Sound of Music one of the most continuously beloved and commercially successful movie musicals in film history.
VS
Singin' in the Rain
Singin' in the Rain, released in 1952, is widely regarded as the greatest movie musical ever made, and its story — set during Hollywood's chaotic transition from silent films to "talkies" in the late 1920s — used the film industry's own history as the backdrop for its comedic and musical storyline. Gene Kelly's title sequence, in which he dances and splashes through a rain-soaked street set while singing the film's signature song, is one of the most recognizable and frequently referenced sequences in film history, reportedly filmed while Kelly had a high fever, adding an additional layer of legend to an already celebrated scene. The film's blend of physical comedy, technically demanding choreography, and affectionate satire of the film industry's own history distinguished it from more straightforwardly romantic or dramatic musicals of its era, giving it a self-aware wit that's helped it age unusually well compared to many contemporaries. Despite its now-legendary reputation, Singin' in the Rain received only modest recognition at the time of its original release, and its status as the definitive greatest movie musical developed substantially over subsequent decades of critical reassessment, similar to the delayed critical reappraisal several other now-classic films have experienced.
