The Super Mario Bros. Movie
The Super Mario Bros. Movie, released in 2023, became the highest-grossing video game film adaptation in history by a substantial margin, and its massive commercial success significantly reshaped the film industry's confidence in adapting major video game properties, following decades of the genre's generally poor box-office and critical track record. Nintendo's unusually direct and hands-on involvement in the film's production, a departure from the company's historically cautious approach to licensing its characters for outside film adaptations, reflected a deliberate strategy to maintain creative control over Mario's big-screen depiction. The film's animated format, produced by Illumination rather than attempting a live-action adaptation, avoided the visual translation problems that had plagued earlier video game films attempting to render cartoonish game characters and worlds in live-action, a lesson widely credited to the notoriously poorly received 1993 live-action Super Mario Bros. film. Its massive commercial success has directly influenced subsequent major studios' willingness to invest in additional big-budget video game adaptations, and the film is frequently cited as the moment the video game movie genre's long-standing commercial and critical curse was finally broken.
VS
Tomb Raider
Tomb Raider, released in 2018 as a reboot of the earlier Angelina Jolie-led film series, drew directly on the video game franchise's own 2013 reboot for its tone and characterization, presenting a grittier, more grounded version of protagonist Lara Croft than the more overtly glamorous earlier films. Alicia Vikander's performance as Lara Croft emphasized the character's physical vulnerability and gradual development into a capable adventurer, reflecting the source game reboot's own deliberate narrative choice to depict Croft's origin story rather than an already-established expert adventurer. The film's extensive practical stunt work and its Cambodia-set jungle setting, filmed partly on location near Angkor Wat, gave Tomb Raider a genuine physical adventure film texture distinct from more digitally reliant contemporary blockbusters. Its combination of drawing directly on a well-regarded recent game reboot's tone and its committed lead performance made the 2018 Tomb Raider one of the more critically respected video game adaptations of its era, even as the film's box-office performance fell short of launching an immediate sequel.
