The Temptations
The Temptations became one of Motown's most commercially successful and longest-lasting vocal groups, and their choreographed dance routines, developed with in-house Motown choreographer Cholly Atkins, established a visual performance standard that influenced nearly every subsequent Motown vocal group. Their 1972 song "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone," incorporating extended instrumental passages and darker, more socially conscious lyrical content, reflected the group's successful evolution beyond Motown's earlier, more straightforwardly romantic pop-soul formula into more musically ambitious "psychedelic soul" territory. The group's numerous lineup changes across more than six decades of continuous activity, with different singers rotating through the group while it maintained its name and brand identity, gave The Temptations one of the most complex and enduring group histories in American vocal group music. Their combination of technically precise vocal harmonies, elaborate choreography, and their successful musical evolution across changing eras has made The Temptations one of the most commercially and artistically significant vocal groups in Motown's entire history.
VS
Diana Ross
Diana Ross's solo career following her departure from The Supremes in 1970 became one of the most commercially successful transitions from group to solo stardom in Motown's history, and her 1980 song "Upside Down" and other disco-era hits established her as a major solo artist independent of her earlier group fame. Her starring role in the 1972 film Lady Sings the Blues, portraying jazz singer Billie Holiday, earned Ross an Academy Award nomination and demonstrated her significant crossover potential into film acting beyond her recording career. Motown founder Berry Gordy's substantial personal and professional investment in developing Ross's solo career, following his earlier deliberate promotion of her as The Supremes' primary lead vocalist, reflected the significant institutional resources the label directed toward her individual stardom. Her combination of massive solo commercial success following The Supremes and her successful film acting crossover has made Ross one of the most individually significant artists to emerge from Motown's broader roster of group acts.
