The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
"The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" (1974), directed by Tobe Hooper, follows a group of friends terrorized by a family of cannibalistic killers in rural Texas, and its raw, low-budget, documentary-like visual style gave it a level of unsettling realism that distinguished it from more polished later slasher entries. Despite its title and marketing, the film contains remarkably little on-screen gore, relying instead on suggestion, sound design, and the sheer relentlessness of its chase sequences to generate its effect, a restraint that later critics have credited with making it more unsettling rather than less. Its villain Leatherface, wearing a mask made of human skin and wielding the film's titular chainsaw, became one of horror's most enduringly disturbing icons, and the film's low-budget, guerrilla production approach influenced decades of subsequent independent horror filmmaking. Its combination of its genuinely unsettling documentary-style realism and its introduction of Leatherface has made "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" one of the most influential and historically significant films in the entire slasher genre.

Friday the 13th
"Friday the 13th" (1980) follows a group of camp counselors stalked and killed one by one at the reopening of the fictional Camp Crystal Lake, becoming one of the most commercially successful and influential entries in the slasher genre's early-1980s boom period. Tom Savini's practical makeup and gore effects, already established through his earlier work with George Romero, gave the film's kill sequences a level of visceral, technically impressive craftsmanship that helped set a new bar for on-screen violence within the emerging genre. The franchise's later introduction of the hockey-masked killer Jason Voorhees, who only actually dons the mask starting with the third installment, went on to become one of horror cinema's most instantly recognizable icons across dozens of sequels and spinoffs. Its combination of launching one of horror's most enduring franchises and its influential practical effects work has made the original "Friday the 13th" one of the foundational texts of the American slasher genre.
