The Thing
The Thing, released in 1982 and directed by John Carpenter, follows an Antarctic research team confronting a shapeshifting alien organism capable of perfectly imitating any living being it absorbs, and the film's practical creature effects, depicting the alien's grotesque transformations, remain some of the most technically celebrated in horror film history. Rob Bottin's makeup and creature effects work, achieved entirely through practical techniques without any digital assistance, pushed body horror's visual possibilities to an extreme that critics and effects artists still reference as a technical high-water mark for the genre. The film's central paranoia premise, in which any team member might secretly be the alien in disguise, created a sustained atmosphere of mutual suspicion that distinguished The Thing's psychological tension from more purely visceral horror films relying primarily on shock effects. Despite its now-legendary reputation, The Thing was a significant box-office and critical disappointment upon its original 1982 release, released the same summer as the more optimistic E.T., and its status as one of the greatest horror films ever made developed substantially through later critical and fan reappraisal.

Possessor
Possessor, released in 2020 and directed by Brandon Cronenberg, son of body horror pioneer David Cronenberg, follows an assassin who uses brain-implant technology to possess other people's bodies to carry out killings, and the film's visceral depiction of psychological and physical identity collapse extends the body horror tradition into a more technologically contemporary context. Its unflinching graphic violence and its unsettling visual depictions of consciousness fragmenting between the possessor and the possessed reflected a clear artistic lineage from the director's father's earlier body horror filmography, while establishing Brandon Cronenberg's own distinct directorial voice. The film's exploration of corporate-controlled identity theft and psychological colonization gave Possessor a science fiction dimension that updated classic body horror's biological transformation themes for an era more concerned with digital surveillance and technologically mediated identity. Possessor's combination of genuinely unsettling visceral body horror imagery and its technologically updated thematic concerns has made it one of the most critically significant body horror films of the 2020s, and it's frequently cited as evidence of a genuine generational continuation of the genre's most significant filmmaking lineage.
