The Wire
The Wire, created by former Baltimore Sun police reporter David Simon, used each of its five seasons to examine a different institution failing the city of Baltimore — the drug trade, the docks, city politics, the school system, and the media — building one of television's most ambitious sustained examinations of American urban institutional decay. The show's famously large, mostly non-professional cast, including numerous actors with genuine connections to Baltimore's neighborhoods and even some formerly involved in the drug trade the show depicted, gave The Wire an unusual documentary-like authenticity that distinguished it from more conventionally cast crime dramas. Despite never winning a major Emmy Award during its original run and drawing relatively modest live viewership, The Wire's critical reputation has grown substantially in the years since it ended, and it's now frequently cited by critics, academics, and fellow television writers as among the greatest television series ever produced. The show's slow-burn, novelistic pacing — plotlines often take multiple episodes or even full seasons to fully pay off — asked more patience of its audience than most television dramas, a structural ambition that's since become a defining reference point for "prestige television" critics use when describing shows that reward sustained, careful viewing.
VS
The Sopranos
The Sopranos premiered on HBO in 1999 and is widely credited by television critics as launching the "prestige TV" era, proving that a cable drama built around morally complex characters and cinematic pacing could draw the kind of critical acclaim and cultural conversation previously reserved for feature films. James Gandolfini's performance as mob boss Tony Soprano, who attends therapy sessions to manage anxiety while running a criminal organization, gave television one of its first genuinely psychologically complex antihero protagonists, a template that directly influenced the wave of prestige cable dramas that followed in the 2000s. The show's famously ambiguous 2007 series finale, which cuts to black mid-scene without a clear resolution to a tense final dinner, became one of the most debated endings in television history, with creator David Chase spending years afterward declining to fully clarify his intended meaning. The Sopranos' structural and tonal DNA — flawed protagonists, novelistic season-long storytelling, and a willingness to move slowly rather than resolve every plot thread neatly — is directly traceable through Breaking Bad, Mad Men, and The Wire, making it the foundational text most television historians point to when explaining television's shift toward serialized, cinematic storytelling.
