This Is Spinal Tap
This Is Spinal Tap, released in 1984 and directed by Rob Reiner, follows a fictional aging British heavy metal band on a disastrous American tour, and the film's largely improvised dialogue, developed by the actors themselves rather than a fully scripted screenplay, gave it an unusually naturalistic comedic texture. The film is widely credited with essentially inventing the modern mockumentary format as a mainstream comedic genre, establishing the deadpan, fake-documentary interview style that numerous subsequent films and television shows have directly built upon. Its fictional band's amplifier that famously "goes to eleven," a joke about a volume dial with an extra, meaningless increment beyond the standard maximum of ten, became one of the most widely referenced phrases in popular culture, entering common usage as shorthand for something taken to an extreme beyond normal limits. This Is Spinal Tap's combination of genuinely convincing fake-documentary craft and its affectionate satire of rock band excess and dysfunction has made it one of the most influential comedies ever made, and it remains the foundational reference point whenever critics discuss the mockumentary genre.
VS
Borat
Borat, released in 2006 and starring Sacha Baron Cohen, follows a fictional Kazakh television journalist traveling across America and interacting with real, unwitting American subjects who believed they were participating in a genuine documentary rather than a scripted comedic film. The film's use of real, non-actor participants, often placed in situations designed to reveal underlying prejudices or social discomfort, generated significant controversy and multiple lawsuits from participants who felt they'd been misleadingly portrayed once the film's true comedic intent became clear. Its satirical target was less the fictional Kazakhstan than genuine American social attitudes toward immigrants, minorities, and social taboos, using the audience's laughter at supposedly "foreign" behavior to expose real prejudices held by the actual Americans Cohen interacted with throughout filming. Borat's combination of genuinely risky, unscripted real-world interactions and its pointed social commentary made it one of the most controversial and commercially successful comedies of the 2000s, and Cohen's willingness to maintain his fictional persona under genuinely unpredictable real-world conditions set a new bar for immersive mockumentary comedic performance.
