Tidal
Tidal launched in 2014 in Norway before being acquired in 2015 by a company controlled by rapper and entrepreneur Jay-Z, who relaunched the service alongside a high-profile press event featuring numerous major music artists as co-owners, positioning Tidal as a more artist-aligned alternative to existing streaming platforms. The service built its early identity around offering lossless, CD-quality and later high-resolution "Master" audio streaming as a standard feature, appealing specifically to audiophile listeners at a time when most competitors reserved higher audio fidelity for limited or nonexistent tiers. Tidal drew significant industry attention for periodically offering exclusive early-access releases from major artists, a strategy aimed at using exclusive content to drive subscriber growth, though the approach saw mixed long-term success compared to the exclusivity strategies of video streaming competitors. Tidal's combination of its high-profile artist-ownership relaunch under Jay-Z and its early emphasis on lossless audiophile-quality streaming has made it one of the most distinctively positioned music streaming services in the industry.
VS
Apple Music
Apple Music launched in June 2015, built substantially on the technology and catalog relationships Apple acquired through its 2014 purchase of Beats Electronics and Beats Music, marking Apple's pivot from its earlier iTunes download-purchase model toward on-demand streaming. The service integrates deeply with Apple's broader hardware and software ecosystem, coming pre-installed on every iPhone, iPad, and Mac, giving it guaranteed built-in distribution to hundreds of millions of Apple device owners without requiring a separate app download. Apple Music was an early adopter of lossless and spatial audio streaming at no additional cost to subscribers, a notable move in the industry since competitors had often reserved higher-fidelity audio for premium add-on tiers, and the service has continued to compete closely with Spotify for the position of largest global music streaming platform. Apple Music's combination of its origins in the Beats acquisition and its guaranteed pre-installed presence across the entire Apple device ecosystem has made it one of the most structurally significant music streaming services in the industry.
