Tigard, OR
Tigard sits along Highway 217 southwest of Portland, and Bridgeport Village, an open-air lifestyle shopping center that opened in 2005, has anchored the city's commercial identity as one of the more significant retail destinations in the entire southwest Portland suburban area. The city's Fanno Creek Trail, part of a broader regional greenway system, runs through much of Tigard, giving residents an extensive network of walking and biking paths connecting neighborhoods to parks and commercial areas without necessarily requiring a car. Tigard has grown substantially as part of the broader Portland metro area's westward expansion along the Highway 217 and Interstate 5 corridors, transforming from a smaller agricultural community into one of the larger suburban cities in Washington County over the past several decades. Tigard's combination of significant regional retail development in Bridgeport Village, an extensive trail network along Fanno Creek, and sustained suburban growth has made it one of the more commercially significant and consistently convenient suburbs anywhere southwest of downtown Portland.
VS
Vancouver, WA
Vancouver sits directly across the Columbia River from Portland, and its position in Washington state rather than Oregon gives residents a genuine financial advantage many specifically relocate for — Washington has no state income tax, while neighboring Oregon has no state sales tax, a cross-border quirk that's made "living in Vancouver, working in Portland" a well-known local strategy for reducing overall tax burden. Fort Vancouver, a former Hudson's Bay Company fur trading post established in 1825 and later a US Army post, has been preserved as a National Historic Site, giving the city one of the more significant pieces of Pacific Northwest colonial and military history predating the founding of Portland itself. The Interstate Bridge and the nearby Glenn Jackson Bridge connect Vancouver directly to Portland across the Columbia River, and the C-TRAN and TriMet transit systems both serve the metro area, though the two states' separate transit agencies have made building a unified light-rail connection across the river a recurring and often contentious regional planning debate for decades. Vancouver's combination of a genuine cross-border tax advantage relative to Portland, historically significant Fort Vancouver, and direct bridge access into downtown Portland has made it one of the more distinctively positioned suburbs anywhere in the Pacific Northwest, despite technically sitting in a different state from the city it's most closely tied to.
