Times Square
Times Square takes its name from The New York Times, which moved its headquarters to the newly built Times Tower at the square's center in 1904 and, that same year, threw the city's first New Year's Eve fireworks celebration there to mark the move — a tradition that evolved into the now-famous ball drop after fireworks were banned in 1907, and has continued in some form almost every year since. The square's density of illuminated billboards is actually mandated by New York City zoning law, which requires a minimum amount of lit signage on buildings within the district — a rare case of a city government legally requiring exactly the kind of visual spectacle Times Square has become globally famous for, rather than merely permitting it. Home to the Broadway Theater District's highest concentration of major venues, Times Square anchors an entertainment corridor that draws both tourists and theatergoers in numbers few other single intersections anywhere in the world can match, with an estimated 50 million visitors passing through annually. For a New York City attractions list, Times Square is the essential "the city's beating, blinking heart" entry — a zoning-mandated wall of light at the center of the Broadway theater district, still dropping the ball every New Year's Eve the way it has, in one form or another, since 1904.
VS
Empire State Building
The Empire State Building was constructed in just over a year, topping out in 1931 after a construction race with two other Manhattan skyscrapers then underway, and its speed of construction — reportedly averaging more than four floors a week during peak periods — remains a frequently cited feat of Depression-era engineering and labor organization. At 1,454 feet including its antenna, it held the title of world's tallest building for nearly 40 years, from its 1931 completion until the World Trade Center's North Tower surpassed it in 1970 — the longest reign of any building to hold that title in the 20th century. Its Art Deco design, with a distinctive stepped-back silhouette and a spire originally intended (unsuccessfully) as a mooring mast for airships, made it an instantly recognizable addition to the Manhattan skyline from the moment it opened. The building's 86th and 102nd floor observation decks have drawn visitors for generations, and its illuminated crown has marked countless holidays and civic occasions with color-coded lighting displays visible for miles across the city. It's also been a fixture of American film for decades, most famously as the setting for the climactic scene in the original 1933 King Kong. For a New York City attractions list, the Empire State Building is the essential "the skyline's original icon" entry — a 1931 Art Deco skyscraper that held the world's-tallest title for nearly four decades and is still one of the most photographed buildings on Earth.
