Times Square
Times Square takes its name from The New York Times, which moved its headquarters to the newly built Times Tower at the square's center in 1904 and, that same year, threw the city's first New Year's Eve fireworks celebration there to mark the move — a tradition that evolved into the now-famous ball drop after fireworks were banned in 1907, and has continued in some form almost every year since. The square's density of illuminated billboards is actually mandated by New York City zoning law, which requires a minimum amount of lit signage on buildings within the district — a rare case of a city government legally requiring exactly the kind of visual spectacle Times Square has become globally famous for, rather than merely permitting it. Home to the Broadway Theater District's highest concentration of major venues, Times Square anchors an entertainment corridor that draws both tourists and theatergoers in numbers few other single intersections anywhere in the world can match, with an estimated 50 million visitors passing through annually. For a New York City attractions list, Times Square is the essential "the city's beating, blinking heart" entry — a zoning-mandated wall of light at the center of the Broadway theater district, still dropping the ball every New Year's Eve the way it has, in one form or another, since 1904.
VS
The Metropolitan Museum of Art
The Metropolitan Museum of Art was founded in 1870 by a group of American businessmen, financiers, and artists who wanted to bring a world-class art institution to the United States, and it opened its doors the following year — not yet in its current Fifth Avenue building, which wouldn't open until 1880 and has been expanded repeatedly in the century and a half since. The Met's collection now spans more than two million works across 5,000 years of human history, from Egyptian antiquities and European Old Masters to American decorative arts and an entire reconstructed Temple of Dendur, an actual ancient Egyptian temple gifted to the United States and reassembled inside a dedicated wing overlooking Central Park. The museum's "pay what you wish" admission policy for New York State residents, a holdover from its founding mission to make world-class art broadly accessible, has made it one of the more debated but enduringly popular admission structures among major American museums, and its annual Met Gala, held in the museum's Costume Institute, has become one of the most closely watched events in global fashion. For a New York City attractions list, the Met is the essential "a lifetime, not an afternoon" entry — a 150-plus-year-old institution holding more than two million objects across five millennia, anchored on Fifth Avenue directly across from Central Park.
