Tito Puente
Tito Puente built a career spanning more than five decades as one of the most important bandleaders bridging Afro-Cuban mambo, Latin jazz, and the salsa sound that grew directly out of those earlier traditions, releasing well over 100 albums across his career. His virtuosic timbales playing, a signature percussion instrument he helped popularize as a featured lead voice rather than a purely supporting rhythm section instrument, became one of the most recognizable individual musical signatures in all of Latin music. Puente's "Oye Como Va," later famously covered by Carlos Santana, became one of the most widely recognized Latin music compositions of the 20th century, introducing his sound to rock audiences who had never otherwise encountered Latin big-band music. His combination of his multi-decade catalog spanning mambo, Latin jazz, and salsa, plus his genre-crossing influence through "Oye Como Va," has made Puente one of the most foundational figures across all of modern Latin music.
VS
Willie Colón
Willie Colón became one of salsa's most important bandleaders and producers, releasing a run of genre-defining albums throughout the 1970s, first with vocalist Héctor Lavoe and later with Rubén Blades, that established the Fania Records label as the definitive salsa institution of its era. His trombone-forward arrangements, incorporating a rawer, more street-oriented New York sound distinct from Cuban son's more traditional instrumentation, helped define what became known specifically as the New York salsa sound, distinguishing it from earlier Afro-Cuban dance music traditions. Colón's subsequent collaborations with Rubén Blades, particularly the album "Siembra," produced some of salsa's most socially and politically conscious lyrical content, expanding the genre's subject matter well beyond conventional dance-floor romantic themes. His combination of his foundational Fania-era productions with both Lavoe and Blades has made Colón one of the most influential bandleaders and producers in salsa's entire history.
