Tom Ford
Tom Ford became creative director of Gucci in 1994 and is widely credited with rescuing the then-struggling Italian fashion house from near financial collapse, transforming it into one of the most commercially successful and culturally relevant luxury brands of the late 1990s through his glamorous, sexually charged design aesthetic. Ford later became creative director of Yves Saint Laurent while simultaneously running Gucci, an unusual dual role at two major fashion houses, before eventually leaving both to launch his own independent luxury brand, Tom Ford International, in 2005. Ford's later career expansion into filmmaking, writing and directing the critically acclaimed films "A Single Man" and "Nocturnal Animals," demonstrated a rare successful crossover from fashion design into serious film directing, a transition few other major fashion figures have achieved with comparable critical success. Tom Ford's combination of his historically significant turnaround of Gucci and his rare successful crossover into acclaimed filmmaking has made him one of the most versatile and influential fashion designers of his generation.
VS
Coco Chanel
Coco Chanel opened her first Paris shop in 1910, and she went on to fundamentally reshape early 20th-century women's fashion by rejecting the restrictive corsets and elaborate ornamentation of the era in favor of simpler, more comfortable, and more functional clothing inspired partly by menswear. Chanel introduced the "little black dress" in 1926, a deliberately simple, versatile garment that Vogue compared to Ford's mass-produced Model T for its democratizing effect on fashion, and Chanel No. 5, launched in 1921, became one of the best-selling perfumes in history and remains in continuous production a century later. Chanel's own biography, including her rise from an impoverished orphanage upbringing to becoming one of the most influential designers in fashion history, along with her controversial activities during the German occupation of France in World War II, made her one of the most complex and closely studied figures in fashion history. Coco Chanel's combination of her revolutionary rejection of restrictive early-20th-century women's fashion and her creation of enduring icons like the little black dress and Chanel No. 5 has made her one of the most influential fashion designers who ever lived.
