Tomb Raider
Tomb Raider, released in 2018 as a reboot of the earlier Angelina Jolie-led film series, drew directly on the video game franchise's own 2013 reboot for its tone and characterization, presenting a grittier, more grounded version of protagonist Lara Croft than the more overtly glamorous earlier films. Alicia Vikander's performance as Lara Croft emphasized the character's physical vulnerability and gradual development into a capable adventurer, reflecting the source game reboot's own deliberate narrative choice to depict Croft's origin story rather than an already-established expert adventurer. The film's extensive practical stunt work and its Cambodia-set jungle setting, filmed partly on location near Angkor Wat, gave Tomb Raider a genuine physical adventure film texture distinct from more digitally reliant contemporary blockbusters. Its combination of drawing directly on a well-regarded recent game reboot's tone and its committed lead performance made the 2018 Tomb Raider one of the more critically respected video game adaptations of its era, even as the film's box-office performance fell short of launching an immediate sequel.
VS
Mortal Kombat
Mortal Kombat, released in 1995, became one of the most commercially successful video game film adaptations of the 1990s, and its combination of martial arts choreography with the source game's supernatural tournament premise gave the film a genre identity distinct from other video game adaptations of its era. The film's techno soundtrack theme, built around a distinctive electronic riff, became one of the most recognizable pieces of music associated with any video game film adaptation, and the theme remains widely referenced in popular culture decades after the film's release. Its relatively faithful adherence to the source game's core characters and tournament structure, compared to some other contemporary video game adaptations that significantly altered their source material, helped the film build a more dedicated fan following among players of the original games. Mortal Kombat's commercial success established it as one of the more fondly remembered video game film adaptations from an era when the genre otherwise struggled significantly with both critical reception and box-office performance.
