Tony Hawk
Tony Hawk landed the first-ever documented 900 — two and a half full aerial rotations on a skateboard — at the 1999 X Games, a trick many in the sport had previously considered physically impossible, and the moment remains one of the most celebrated individual achievements in action sports history. His video game franchise, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, launched in 1999, became one of the best-selling sports video game series in history and is widely credited with introducing skateboarding culture to a massive mainstream audience well beyond the sport's existing community. Hawk's combination of competitive dominance throughout the 1980s and '90s, winning numerous vert skating championships, and his subsequent business ventures spanning apparel, video games, and skate park design have made him the most commercially significant and recognizable individual figure in skateboarding's history. His sustained mainstream visibility, extending decades past his competitive prime through his business ventures and continued public presence, has made Hawk synonymous with skateboarding itself for a large segment of the American public, regardless of their familiarity with the broader sport.
VS
Letícia Bufoni
Letícia Bufoni has won more Summer X Games gold medals than any other female street skateboarder, establishing herself as one of the most decorated competitors in the history of women's competitive skateboarding across more than a decade of sustained dominance. Her technical street skating style, built around consistent execution of difficult ledge and rail tricks, made Bufoni the standard-bearer for women's street skateboarding throughout the 2010s, during a period when the discipline's competitive infrastructure and prize money were significantly expanding. Bufoni's move from Brazil to the United States as a teenager to pursue professional skateboarding more seriously reflected the significant personal and financial sacrifice many international skateboarders have made to access the sport's more developed competitive infrastructure in California specifically. Her combination of sustained X Games dominance and her role in helping build women's street skateboarding's competitive legitimacy and visibility has made Bufoni one of the most significant figures in the sport's growth as a genuinely competitive discipline for women specifically.
