Towson, MD
Towson serves as the county seat of Baltimore County despite being an unincorporated community rather than its own independent city, and the Baltimore County Courthouse anchors a downtown that's functioned as the county's administrative and commercial center for well over a century. Towson University, the second-largest university in the University System of Maryland by enrollment, gives the community a genuine college-town presence layered on top of its role as a government and retail hub, with the school's roughly 20,000 students shaping much of the surrounding area's restaurant and rental housing market. Towson Town Center, one of the larger enclosed shopping malls in the Baltimore metro area, has made the community a significant regional retail destination alongside its administrative and academic identity, drawing shoppers from across Baltimore County and beyond. Towson's combination of serving as Baltimore County's seat of government, hosting a major public university, and anchoring significant regional retail has made it one of the more functionally significant suburbs anywhere in the greater Baltimore metropolitan area.
VS
Catonsville, MD
Catonsville developed in the 19th century as a resort community for wealthy Baltimore residents seeking to escape the summer heat of the city, and its elevated position on a ridge west of Baltimore gave it a genuinely cooler climate that made it an attractive retreat well before it became a year-round suburb. The community became nationally known in 1968 as the site of the "Catonsville Nine" draft board raid, in which a group of Vietnam War protesters, including Catholic priests Daniel and Philip Berrigan, seized and burned draft records using homemade napalm outside the local Selective Service office — an act of civil disobedience that became one of the most widely covered anti-war protests of the era and inspired a play and film. Catonsville's historic Frederick Road corridor has preserved a walkable cluster of late-19th and early-20th-century commercial buildings, and the area is also home to the Catonsville campus of the Community College of Baltimore County, giving the community a modest higher-education presence alongside its historic resort-town character. Catonsville's combination of its origins as a 19th-century Baltimore summer retreat and its unexpected role in one of the most significant anti-Vietnam War protests in American history has made it one of the more historically layered suburbs anywhere west of Baltimore.
