Tupac Shakur
Tupac Shakur released four studio albums during his lifetime before his 1996 murder in Las Vegas at 25, and posthumous releases have continued for decades since, reflecting both the sheer volume of material he recorded in a short career and the enduring commercial demand for his catalog. His combination of raw, politically charged lyricism addressing systemic racism and poverty alongside deeply personal, emotionally vulnerable songwriting gave Tupac a range that distinguished him from more narrowly focused contemporaries, letting him move between confrontational anthems and introspective ballads within the same album. The unsolved nature of his murder, along with the parallel unsolved 1997 killing of rival rapper The Notorious B.I.G. six months later, became one of hip-hop's most consequential and closely scrutinized tragedies, fueling decades of media coverage, documentaries, and law enforcement investigations that remain only partially resolved. Tupac's 1996 album All Eyez on Me was one of the first double albums in hip-hop history, and his combined body of work — spanning acting roles alongside his music career — has made him one of the best-selling music artists of all time, with an influence on hip-hop songwriting and image that's only grown in the decades since his death.
VS
The Notorious B.I.G.
The Notorious B.I.G., born Christopher Wallace in Brooklyn, released his debut album Ready to Die in 1994 to widespread critical acclaim, establishing a vivid, narrative-driven lyrical style that balanced violent street tales with genuinely funny, self-aware humor in a way few of his contemporaries matched. His technical rapping ability — a smooth, unhurried flow combined with intricate internal rhyme schemes — is still cited by other rappers and hip-hop critics as among the most technically accomplished of any artist in the genre's history, setting a lyrical benchmark that influenced a generation of East Coast rappers who followed him. Biggie's second album, Life After Death, was released in March 1997, just 16 days after his unsolved murder in Los Angeles at 24, and its posthumous commercial success — it went on to multi-platinum sales — only deepened the sense of loss around a career many felt was still building toward its peak. His rivalry with Tupac Shakur, fueled in part by the broader East Coast-West Coast hip-hop tensions of the mid-1990s, became one of the genre's most consequential and tragic storylines, and Biggie's technical influence on rap songwriting has remained a consistent reference point for hip-hop artists in the decades since.
