Universal Orlando Resort
Universal Orlando Resort opened its first Florida park, Universal Studios Florida, in 1990, built around a working film and television production studio concept combined with rides and attractions themed to Universal's own film properties, directly competing with the nearby Walt Disney World resort. The resort's 2010 opening of The Wizard of the World of Harry Potter, an immersive land recreating Hogsmeade village in exacting detail, became a genuine industry-changing moment, widely credited with raising the bar for thematic detail and immersion that competing theme parks subsequently felt pressure to match. Universal's aggressive expansion of its Harry Potter offerings, including a second Wizarding World land and a dedicated Hogwarts Express train connecting the resort's two parks, demonstrated the commercial power of building deeply immersive lands around a single beloved intellectual property. Universal Orlando Resort's combination of its working-studio theme park concept and its industry-transforming Wizarding World of Harry Potter lands has made it one of the most influential modern theme park destinations in the world.
VS
Walt Disney World
Walt Disney World opened in Bay Lake and Lake Buena Vista, Florida in October 1971, conceived as a vastly larger version of the original Disneyland after Walt Disney grew frustrated with the loss of control over land surrounding the California park, which had filled with competing hotels and attractions. The resort's Magic Kingdom park, its first, was built on a raised platform specifically to house an entire underground utility and cast-member tunnel network beneath the park, letting employees and equipment move throughout the resort without ever crossing paths with paying guests in "onstage" areas. Walt Disney World grew over subsequent decades into a massive multi-park resort complex including Epcot, Disney's Hollywood Studios, and Disney's Animal Kingdom, along with dozens of hotels, becoming the largest and most-visited vacation resort complex in the world. Walt Disney World's combination of its purpose-built underground utility infrastructure and its growth into the world's largest vacation resort complex has made it one of the most commercially significant amusement park destinations ever created.
