University of Alaska Southeast
The University of Alaska Southeast, founded in 1972, serves Alaska's Panhandle region from its main campus in Juneau, the state capital, giving students in its public administration and political science programs direct proximity to Alaska's state government institutions. The university's fisheries and marine biology programs benefit directly from Southeast Alaska's globally significant commercial fishing industry, giving students research and career preparation tied directly to one of the state's most economically significant industries. UAS's small size and its Juneau, Sitka, and Ketchikan campuses reflect the university's mission serving Southeast Alaska's dispersed island and coastal communities, a region only accessible by boat or plane given the absence of a connecting road system. The university's combination of its capital-city location and its fisheries programs tied to Southeast Alaska's marine economy has made UAS a distinctive regional institution within Alaska's public university system.
VS
University of Alaska Fairbanks
The University of Alaska Fairbanks, founded in 1917, is the state's original land-grant flagship university and operates one of the most significant Arctic and climate research programs in the world, benefiting directly from its subarctic location for studying permafrost, sea ice, and northern ecosystem change. The university's Geophysical Institute conducts globally significant research into the aurora borealis and space weather, and UAF's status as home to one of the world's premier Arctic research programs gives it international scientific significance disproportionate to its relatively small student enrollment. UAF's rural and Alaska Native-focused programs, including its extensive network of rural campuses serving remote Alaska Native communities across the state, reflect the university's institutional commitment to reaching Alaska's geographically dispersed and demographically significant Indigenous population. The university's combination of globally significant Arctic and climate research and its extensive rural outreach serving Alaska Native communities has made UAF one of the most scientifically distinctive public research universities in the country.
