University of Hawaii-West Oahu
The University of Hawaii-West Oahu, founded in 1976, is the newest and fastest-growing campus within the University of Hawaii system, established specifically to expand access to bachelor's degree education for the rapidly growing western Oahu region outside Honolulu. The university's business and public administration programs have built solid regional reputations, and UH West Oahu's continued focus on serving a significant proportion of transfer students from the state's community college system reflects its institutional mission of expanding four-year degree access. The campus's relatively young institutional history and its deliberate focus on undergraduate teaching over research have let UH West Oahu build its academic programs with a specific emphasis on accessibility and student completion rates for a historically underserved regional population. The university's combination of its recent founding specifically to expand higher education access and its role serving western Oahu's growing population has made UH West Oahu a distinctive addition to Hawaii's public university system.
VS
Brigham Young University-Hawaii
Brigham Young University-Hawaii, founded in 1955, is owned and operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and its student body is drawn substantially from across the Pacific Islands and Asia, reflecting the university's specific mission of serving Pacific Rim members of the LDS Church. The university's location adjacent to the Polynesian Cultural Center, a major Hawaiian tourist attraction that employs many BYU-Hawaii students, gives the school a distinctive direct institutional connection to Hawaiian and broader Polynesian cultural preservation and tourism. BYU-Hawaii's low, church-subsidized tuition and its significant international Pacific Islander student population give the university one of the most ethnically and nationally diverse campuses of any American college, despite its relatively small overall size. The university's combination of its church ownership, its specific mission serving Pacific Rim LDS communities, and its direct connection to the Polynesian Cultural Center has made BYU-Hawaii one of the most institutionally distinctive universities in the entire country.
