University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign
The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, founded in 1867 as a land-grant institution, has built one of the country's most respected engineering and computer science programs, and its early computing research produced PLATO, one of the first generalized computer-based education systems, along with foundational work that led to the Mosaic web browser in the early 1990s. UIUC's engineering college consistently ranks among the top handful of programs in the country, and its computer science department's alumni and faculty have gone on to found or lead major technology companies, giving the university an outsized influence on the tech industry relative to its status as a public land-grant school rather than a coastal research powerhouse. The university's National Center for Supercomputing Applications has been at the forefront of high-performance computing research for decades, and its role in developing early web browser technology helped lay some of the technical groundwork for the commercial internet that followed. UIUC's massive enrollment, more than 56,000 students across its campus, combined with in-state tuition well below elite private universities, has made it one of the most consistently strong values in American public higher education, particularly for students pursuing engineering or computer science degrees.
VS
Northwestern University
Northwestern University, founded in 1851 by a group of Methodist businessmen and named for the Northwest Territory it was chartered to serve, has grown into one of the country's top research universities, with a Evanston campus directly on Lake Michigan just north of Chicago. The Medill School of Journalism is consistently ranked among the best journalism programs in the country, and Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management similarly ranks among the top business schools nationally, giving the university unusually strong programs in both media and business that draw on its proximity to Chicago's corporate and media industries. Northwestern's combination of Big Ten athletics, an elite academic reputation, and a lakefront suburban campus close to a major city has made it one of the more distinctive elite research universities — competing academically with the Ivy League while also fielding Division I sports teams in one of the country's most competitive athletic conferences. The university's theater and performance studies programs have produced a disproportionate share of working film, television, and stage actors relative to the size of the program, giving Northwestern an entertainment-industry pipeline that rivals dedicated conservatory programs despite being embedded within a large comprehensive research university.
