University of Maryland, College Park
The University of Maryland, College Park, founded in 1856, is the state's flagship public research university, and its proximity to Washington, DC gives students and faculty unusually direct access to federal agencies, national laboratories, and policy institutions clustered in the surrounding metropolitan area. The university's computer science and engineering programs have built particularly strong reputations, benefiting from research partnerships with NASA's nearby Goddard Space Flight Center and the National Institute of Standards and Technology, both located within a short drive of campus. Maryland's journalism school and its criminology and criminal justice programs, both consistently ranked among the best at any public university, draw directly on the school's proximity to national media outlets and federal law enforcement agencies headquartered in the DC area. The university's Terrapins athletic programs and its move from the ACC to the Big Ten conference in 2014 reflected the broader institutional ambition to raise Maryland's national athletic and academic profile, a shift that's coincided with continued strong federal research funding tied to the university's Washington-area location.
VS
United States Naval Academy
The United States Naval Academy, founded in 1845, trains midshipmen to become commissioned officers in the US Navy and Marine Corps, and admission requires a nomination from a member of Congress or another authorized official, a selection process shared with the country's other federal service academies rather than a traditional civilian admissions process. The academy's historic Annapolis campus, known as "the Yard," sits directly on the Severn River where it meets the Chesapeake Bay, and its Beaux-Arts chapel, with a crypt containing the remains of Revolutionary War naval hero John Paul Jones, is one of the most architecturally significant buildings on any American military campus. Tuition, room, and board are fully covered for all midshipmen in exchange for a post-graduation service commitment, and the demanding daily schedule combines a full engineering-heavy academic course load with military training, physical fitness requirements, and leadership development from the first day of Plebe Summer onward. The academy's football rivalry with West Point, contested annually in the Army-Navy Game, is one of the most storied rivalries in college sports, and the academy's combination of rigorous engineering-focused academics and direct commissioning into naval or Marine Corps service has made it one of the most selective undergraduate institutions in the country by admission rate.
