University of Miami
The University of Miami, founded in 1925 just months before a devastating hurricane and the collapse of Florida's land boom nearly bankrupted the fledgling school before its first classes even finished, has grown into the state's leading private research university, with a Coral Gables campus known for its Mediterranean Revival architecture. The university's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science is one of the top-ranked oceanography and climate research programs in the country, a natural strength given Miami's coastal location and direct exposure to the hurricane and climate research questions the region faces firsthand. UM's Miller School of Medicine and its law school have each built strong national reputations, and the university's location at the center of South Florida's international business and Latin American finance corridor gives its business school unusually direct ties to cross-border commerce and international student recruitment. The university's "Cane Fever" football culture, particularly its dominant run of national championships in the 1980s and '90s under coaches like Jimmy Johnson, built Miami's national athletic brand well before its academic rankings caught up, and the two reputations — swagger-driven football success and a steadily rising research profile — now coexist as part of the university's identity.
VS
New College of Florida
New College of Florida, founded in 1960 as a private liberal arts college before becoming part of the state university system in 1975, has long operated as Florida's designated "honors college," admitting a small, academically selective student body onto a public-university tuition structure that's unusually generous relative to the caliber of instruction offered. The college's academic model replaces traditional letter grades with narrative evaluations for most of its history, and students design individualized study plans called "contracts" rather than following a fixed distribution of required courses, a structure that gives New College one of the most unconventional undergraduate curricula among American public colleges. With an enrollment under 700 students, New College maintains an unusually small, intimate campus culture directly on Sarasota Bay, and its small size has historically let it maintain the kind of close faculty mentorship more typical of elite private liberal arts colleges than public universities. The college underwent a highly publicized and contentious leadership and curriculum overhaul beginning in 2023, after a new state-appointed board of trustees moved to reshape its academic and cultural direction — a still-unfolding transition that's made New College one of the most closely watched public liberal arts colleges in the country.
