University of Minnesota
The University of Minnesota, founded in 1851, is one of the largest and most comprehensive public research universities in the country, and its Twin Cities campus, split across the Mississippi River between Minneapolis and St. Paul, gives students access to one of the largest metropolitan economies in the Midwest. The university's Carlson School of Management and its engineering and medical programs have each built strong national reputations, and the University of Minnesota's role as the site of several major medical firsts — including some of the earliest successful open-heart surgeries — reflects its long institutional history of significant biomedical research. Minnesota's status as a land-grant, sea-grant, and space-grant institution simultaneously, one of only a small handful of universities holding all three designations, reflects the breadth of federal research funding and mission the university has accumulated across agriculture, marine science, and aerospace research over its history. The university's massive scale, with more than 50,000 students across its combined campus system, and its deep integration into the Twin Cities' corporate, medical, and cultural institutions have made it the dominant public research university across the entire Upper Midwest region.
VS
St. Olaf College
St. Olaf College, founded in 1874 by Norwegian Lutheran immigrants, maintains one of the strongest undergraduate music programs of any liberal arts college in the country, anchored by the St. Olaf Choir, whose annual Christmas Festival concert has been broadcast nationally on public television for decades. The college's continued affiliation with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America reflects its Norwegian immigrant founding, and St. Olaf's Norwegian-American heritage remains visible across campus, including in its Scandinavian studies program and its historic Norwegian-influenced architecture. St. Olaf's science programs, particularly chemistry and biology, send a high proportion of graduates on to medical school and doctoral programs relative to the college's size, reflecting a strong pre-professional science track alongside its equally strong music and humanities offerings. The college's location directly across town from rival Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, has fostered a friendly but genuine athletic and academic rivalry between the two schools, and St. Olaf's combination of a nationally regarded music program and strong science preparation has made it a distinctive choice among Midwestern liberal arts colleges.
