University of North Dakota
The University of North Dakota, founded in 1883, operates one of the largest and most respected aviation programs in the country through its John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences, training a significant proportion of the commercial airline pilots entering the industry each year. The university's medical school is the state's only medical school, giving UND a central role in training North Dakota's physician workforce, and the university's petroleum engineering program benefits directly from North Dakota's significant Bakken shale oil production. UND's Grand Forks campus and its aviation program's fleet of dedicated training aircraft give students hands-on flight training infrastructure uncommon at most other public universities of comparable size. The university's combination of its nationally significant aviation program and its role as the state's sole medical school has made UND central to both North Dakota's higher education system and its aerospace and healthcare workforce pipelines.
VS
University of Mary
The University of Mary, founded in 1959 by Catholic Benedictine sisters, has built one of the largest Catholic universities in the Upper Midwest, with a significant expansion into online and extended-campus programs across multiple states beyond North Dakota. The university's occupational therapy and nursing programs have grown substantially, and Mary's continued explicit Catholic mission, including required theology and philosophy coursework, shapes the curriculum across the university's expanding range of professional degree offerings. The university's Bismarck, North Dakota campus overlooking the Missouri River gives it a scenic setting, and University of Mary's rapid enrollment growth over the past two decades has made it one of the fastest-growing Catholic universities in the country. The university's combination of its Benedictine Catholic mission and its significant multi-state extended-campus expansion has made University of Mary one of the most institutionally ambitious Catholic universities in the Upper Midwest.
