University of Wisconsin-Madison
The University of Wisconsin-Madison, founded in 1848, is one of the top public research universities in the country, and its "Wisconsin Idea," a founding institutional philosophy holding that the university's research and teaching should directly serve the entire state rather than remaining confined to campus, has shaped the school's public mission for well over a century. The university's campus sits directly on the shores of Lake Mendota, and its Memorial Union Terrace, with its brightly colored sunburst chairs facing the lake, has become one of the most recognizable and photographed public gathering spaces at any American university. UW-Madison's agricultural and life sciences programs rank among the very best in the country, reflecting the university's land-grant mission, and its journalism, business, and engineering programs have each built strong national reputations as well, giving the university comprehensive strength across a wide range of academic fields. The university's research funding regularly ranks among the top handful of American universities for total federal research dollars received, and UW-Madison's combination of research-university scale, a passionate Big Ten athletic culture, and its distinctive lakefront campus setting has made it one of the most consistently popular public universities in the country among both in-state and out-of-state applicants.
VS
Ripon College
Ripon College, founded in 1851, is widely credited as one of the founding sites of the Republican Party, with an 1854 meeting held in Ripon's Little White Schoolhouse considered by many historians to be the party's first organizational gathering, a piece of American political history the small college actively preserves and promotes. The college's small size, fewer than 900 undergraduates, and its rural central Wisconsin location give Ripon an intimate, close-knit campus culture, and its "Ripon Plan" curriculum emphasizes small, discussion-based classes with a low student-faculty ratio throughout a student's four years. Ripon's education and pre-law programs have built solid regional reputations, and the college's relatively accessible admissions profile compared to some of Wisconsin's more selective private colleges has made it a consistent choice for students seeking a small liberal arts experience without the extreme selectivity of peer institutions. The college's historical claim to the Republican Party's founding gives it a level of niche national recognition disproportionate to its small size, and Ripon continues to host events and maintain archives connected to that history as part of its institutional identity.
