University of Nevada, Las Vegas
The University of Nevada, Las Vegas, founded in 1957, has built one of the strongest hospitality management programs in the country, drawing directly on the university's location within Las Vegas, the global capital of the hospitality, casino, and entertainment industries. The William F. Harrah College of Hospitality gives students unusually direct access to internships and research partnerships with major casino resort operators headquartered or operating extensively on the Las Vegas Strip, an industry connection few other hospitality programs nationally can match. UNLV's law school and its growing medical school, established in 2017 as Nevada's second public medical school, reflect the university's broader institutional expansion beyond its historical hospitality and business focus into more comprehensive research-university offerings. The university's Runnin' Rebels men's basketball program, including a 1990 national championship, gave UNLV a significant national athletic profile, and the university's combination of its globally significant hospitality program and its growing medical and law schools has made it central to both Las Vegas's economy and Nevada's higher education system.
VS
University of Nevada, Reno
The University of Nevada, Reno, founded in 1874, is the state's oldest university and its original flagship, and the school's mining engineering program reflects Nevada's historical and continued significance as one of the largest gold-mining states in the country. The university's seismology and earthquake engineering research benefit from Nevada's significant seismic activity, and UNR's Desert Research Institute conducts significant environmental and climate research specific to the arid Great Basin region surrounding the university. UNR's journalism school, one of the oldest in the country, has built a solid national reputation, and the university's continued strength in mining, geological, and seismic engineering research reflects its founding-era origins tied directly to Nevada's mineral extraction economy. The university's combination of its genuine seniority as Nevada's original flagship university and its specific research strength in mining and seismic engineering, tied directly to the state's geology, has made UNR distinct from the more hospitality-focused academic identity of UNLV in the south.
