US Capitol
The US Capitol's construction began in 1793, with George Washington himself laying the cornerstone, and the building has been expanded and rebuilt repeatedly since — including a rebuild after British troops burned it during the War of 1812 — culminating in the current cast-iron dome, completed during the Civil War in 1863 as a deliberate symbol of national unity even as the country was actively at war with itself. The dome is topped by the Statue of Freedom, a roughly 19-foot bronze figure that had to be cast in sections and hoisted into place, with President Lincoln reportedly insisting construction continue uninterrupted through the war specifically to signal confidence that the Union would endure. The building houses both chambers of Congress and has been the site of numerous significant historical events, including the certification of presidential elections and, more recently, the January 6, 2021, breach of the building during the certification of the 2020 election — an event that caused significant damage and remains one of the most consequential incidents in the Capitol's history. For a Washington, DC attractions list, the US Capitol is the essential "unity under fire" entry — a Civil War-era dome completed as a deliberate wartime symbol, still the working seat of Congress and the site of the country's most consequential political moments.
VS
Washington Monument
The Washington Monument's construction began in 1848 but stalled for over two decades due to funding shortfalls and the Civil War, leaving the unfinished obelisk standing at roughly a third of its planned height for years — a visible color change in the stone partway up the monument still marks exactly where construction paused and later resumed with marble from a different quarry. At 555 feet, it was the tallest structure in the world upon its 1884 completion, a title it held only briefly before being surpassed by the Eiffel Tower five years later, and it remains the tallest structure in Washington, DC, protected by a building-height limit specifically enacted to keep the monument visually dominant over the city's skyline. The monument is built as a hollow obelisk, and its interior contains 193 carved memorial stones donated by US states, foreign countries, and various organizations, embedded into the interior walls during the original construction as a way of crowdsourcing both funding and a physical honor roll of contributors. For a Washington, DC attractions list, the Washington Monument is the essential "the obelisk with a visible scar" entry — an 1884 monument whose construction pause during the Civil War is still visible in its stone today, standing as the tallest structure the city's own building codes will allow.
