Valentina Vezzali
Valentina Vezzali won six Olympic gold medals in foil fencing across five consecutive Olympics from 1996 to 2012, including three straight individual foil golds from 2000 to 2008, a level of sustained individual dominance across more than a decade that made her the most decorated Olympic fencer in history at the time of her retirement. Her aggressive, attacking foil style, combined with an unusually long and successful competitive career spanning more than 20 years at the international level, established Vezzali as the dominant figure in women's foil during an era when Italy fielded one of the deepest fencing programs of any nation. Vezzali continued competing at an elite international level even after giving birth to her son in 2010, returning to win Olympic gold again in 2012 at 38, a level of post-pregnancy competitive return that drew significant attention within the broader women's Olympic sports community. After retiring from competition, Vezzali entered Italian politics, serving as a government undersecretary for sport, extending her public influence on Italian athletics well beyond her own competitive fencing career, which remains the individual benchmark for Olympic fencing success across either gender.
VS
Mariel Zagunis
Mariel Zagunis won Olympic gold in saber fencing at both the 2004 Athens and 2008 Beijing Games, becoming the first American fencer to win an individual Olympic gold medal in 100 years when she claimed the 2004 title, a drought that reflected just how rarely American fencers had previously reached the top of Olympic competition. Her 2004 gold came as a genuine surprise, as Zagunis wasn't initially expected to make the US Olympic team at all and only qualified after another fencer's positive doping test opened a spot on the roster — a fortunate opportunity she then converted into an unexpected gold medal. Zagunis competed at four consecutive Olympics between 2004 and 2016, and her sustained presence at the top of American saber fencing helped raise the sport's domestic visibility in the United States at a time when fencing otherwise received minimal mainstream American sports media coverage. Her back-to-back individual Olympic golds established Zagunis as the most successful American fencer in modern Olympic history, and her career helped inspire a subsequent generation of American fencers to pursue the sport more seriously as a genuine Olympic medal opportunity rather than a niche pursuit.
