V/H/S
V/H/S, released in 2012, structured its found footage horror as an anthology of separate short films connected by a wraparound story involving a group of criminals discovering a collection of disturbing VHS tapes, giving the genre a horror-anthology structure that let multiple different directors contribute distinct segments. The film's format allowed for significant stylistic variety across its individual segments, each directed by different up-and-coming horror filmmakers, giving V/H/S a showcase quality that helped launch or elevate the profiles of several subsequently significant genre directors. Its combination of found footage's raw, degraded visual aesthetic with an anthology structure spawned a lengthy franchise of sequels, each continuing the format of commissioning multiple different directors to contribute separate found-footage-style horror shorts. V/H/S's combination of its anthology structure and its role launching or showcasing numerous subsequently significant horror directors has made it one of the most influential found footage films in establishing the format as a viable vehicle for showcasing diverse independent horror filmmaking talent.
VS
The Blair Witch Project
The Blair Witch Project, released in 1999, is widely credited as the film that established found footage horror as a viable mainstream commercial genre, presenting itself as recovered footage from three student filmmakers who disappeared while investigating a local Maryland legend. Its groundbreaking marketing campaign, which deliberately blurred the line between the film's fictional premise and reality through a viral website and promotional materials suggesting the footage might be genuine, became one of the most studied and influential film marketing strategies in movie history, particularly given its use of the still relatively new internet as a promotional tool. Made on an extraordinarily modest budget of roughly $60,000, the film's massive commercial success, grossing nearly $250 million worldwide, made it one of the most profitable films relative to its budget in cinema history. The Blair Witch Project's raw, deliberately amateurish handheld camera style and its reliance on suggested rather than depicted horror established the core found footage conventions that virtually every subsequent film in the genre has continued to draw from.
