Vice
Vice, released in 2018 and directed by Adam McKay, dramatizes the political career of Dick Cheney, tracing his rise from a struggling young congressional aide to one of the most powerful vice presidents in American history, and Christian Bale's transformative physical performance in the lead role won him a Golden Globe. The film's unconventional structural choices, including a fake mid-movie ending and direct fourth-wall-breaking narration from a mysterious narrator later revealed to have a specific thematic connection to Cheney's life, reflected McKay's continued interest in formally unconventional approaches to depicting serious political and economic subject matter. Vice's satirical, often darkly comedic tone toward its subject matter, while still grounding its narrative in extensively researched historical events, gave the film a tonal register distinct from more straightforwardly serious political biographical dramas. The film's release drew significant political controversy given Cheney's continued polarizing legacy, particularly regarding the Iraq War and expanded executive power during the George W. Bush administration, and Vice remains one of the more overtly satirical major studio political dramas of the 2010s.
VS
All the President's Men
All the President's Men, released in 1976, dramatizes Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein's investigation into the Watergate scandal, and the film's meticulous depiction of methodical, unglamorous investigative journalism became a foundational text for how Hollywood subsequently portrayed the reporting profession. Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman's performances as Woodward and Bernstein anchored a film built almost entirely around research, phone calls, and note-taking rather than conventional dramatic action, and the movie's success demonstrated that genuinely process-focused storytelling could sustain mainstream commercial appeal. The film's mysterious source "Deep Throat," who fed Woodward crucial anonymous tips throughout the investigation, remained unidentified publicly for more than three decades until former FBI official Mark Felt revealed himself as the source in 2005, adding a decades-long real-world mystery to the film's already significant cultural legacy. All the President's Men won four Academy Awards, and its detailed depiction of the actual Watergate investigation's grinding, incremental nature established a lasting template for journalism and political thriller filmmaking that emphasized institutional process and dogged persistence over more conventionally dramatic revelations.
