Villanova University
Villanova University, founded in 1842 by the Augustinian order of the Catholic Church, is the oldest Catholic university in Pennsylvania, and its Augustinian mission — emphasizing community, truth-seeking, and personal formation — continues to shape the university's approach to undergraduate education across all of its colleges. Villanova's men's basketball program won national championships in 1985, 2016, and 2018, giving the university one of the more improbable championship résumés in college sports — the 1985 title, won as a heavily underdog eighth seed, is still frequently cited as one of the greatest upsets in NCAA tournament history. The university's College of Engineering and its Villanova School of Business have each built strong regional and national reputations, and Villanova's location just outside Philadelphia gives students access to the city's business, healthcare, and professional job markets while maintaining a distinct suburban Main Line campus. Villanova's combination of a relatively selective private-university academic profile, a strong Catholic institutional identity, and nationally prominent basketball success has made it one of the more recognizable mid-sized private universities in the Northeast, drawing students specifically seeking that particular mix of rigor, faith-based mission, and high-profile athletics.

Pennsylvania State University
Pennsylvania State University, founded in 1855 as a land-grant agricultural college, has grown into one of the largest university systems in the country, with its University Park flagship campus alone enrolling more than 40,000 students and a broader Commonwealth Campus system extending across two dozen additional locations statewide. Penn State's engineering, business, and meteorology programs have each built strong national reputations, and the university's Applied Research Laboratory maintains one of the closest and longest-running research partnerships with the US Navy of any American university, reflecting decades of federally funded acoustics and materials research. The university's Nittany Lions football program and its "White Out" home games at Beaver Stadium, one of the largest stadiums in the world by capacity, have made Penn State one of the most recognizable athletic brands in the Big Ten, a national profile that's shaped the university's public identity as much as its academics have. Penn State's THON, an annual student-run dance marathon benefiting pediatric cancer research and treatment, has grown into the largest student-run philanthropy in the world, raising tens of millions of dollars over its history and giving the university a distinctive philanthropic identity that extends well beyond its academic and athletic reputations.
