Virginia Tech
Virginia Tech, founded in 1872 as a land-grant military college, maintains the Corps of Cadets as an optional undergraduate program alongside its much larger civilian student body, a military tradition dating to the university's founding that continues to produce a significant share of the US Army's commissioned officers each year. The university's College of Engineering is one of the largest and most respected in the country, and Virginia Tech's aerospace, mechanical, and computer engineering programs have built particularly strong reputations, drawing on the university's decades-long research partnerships with the federal government and defense contractors. The campus and community endured a devastating 2007 mass shooting, one of the deadliest in American history at the time, and Virginia Tech has since become a nationally cited case study in campus safety policy and mental health response, with the university actively engaged in ongoing research and advocacy stemming from that tragedy. Virginia Tech's Blacksburg campus, built largely from distinctive local "Hokie Stone" limestone quarried near campus, gives the university an architecturally uniform, recognizable look, and its combination of engineering strength, a proud military tradition, and one of the most passionate fan bases in college football has made it one of Virginia's most recognizable public universities.
VS
University of Virginia
The University of Virginia was founded in 1819 by Thomas Jefferson, who designed the original campus himself — a complex he called the "Academical Village," centered on the Rotunda, a domed library building modeled on the Pantheon in Rome that Jefferson considered one of his proudest architectural achievements alongside Monticello. Jefferson's original design deliberately placed the library, rather than a church, at the physical and symbolic center of the university, a break from the religiously oriented campus layouts of most other early American colleges that reflected Jefferson's Enlightenment-era emphasis on secular scholarship over religious instruction. UVA's Darden School of Business and its law school have each built strong national reputations, and the university's "Honor System," a student-run code prohibiting lying, cheating, and stealing with a single sanction of expulsion, has operated continuously since 1842, making it one of the oldest and strictest student-governed honor codes at any American university. The university's combination of a Jefferson-designed historic campus, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and consistently top-tier public-university rankings has made UVA one of the most selective public universities in the country, frequently grouped alongside UC Berkeley and Michigan as the strongest public research universities outside a state's largest metropolitan area.
