Virginia Tech
Virginia Tech, founded in 1872 as a land-grant military college, maintains the Corps of Cadets as an optional undergraduate program alongside its much larger civilian student body, a military tradition dating to the university's founding that continues to produce a significant share of the US Army's commissioned officers each year. The university's College of Engineering is one of the largest and most respected in the country, and Virginia Tech's aerospace, mechanical, and computer engineering programs have built particularly strong reputations, drawing on the university's decades-long research partnerships with the federal government and defense contractors. The campus and community endured a devastating 2007 mass shooting, one of the deadliest in American history at the time, and Virginia Tech has since become a nationally cited case study in campus safety policy and mental health response, with the university actively engaged in ongoing research and advocacy stemming from that tragedy. Virginia Tech's Blacksburg campus, built largely from distinctive local "Hokie Stone" limestone quarried near campus, gives the university an architecturally uniform, recognizable look, and its combination of engineering strength, a proud military tradition, and one of the most passionate fan bases in college football has made it one of Virginia's most recognizable public universities.
VS
Washington and Lee University
Washington and Lee University, founded in 1749, carries the names of two of the most consequential figures in American history — George Washington, whose 1796 stock gift saved the financially struggling school and prompted its renaming, and Robert E. Lee, who served as the university's president after the Civil War and is buried in a chapel on campus that still bears his name. The university's student-run Honor System, in which violations can result in expulsion decided entirely by a student-elected panel, is considered one of the strictest and most fully student-governed honor codes among American colleges, giving W&L students an unusually high degree of self-governance over academic and social conduct. W&L's undergraduate business program, the Williams School, is one of the only accredited undergraduate business programs housed within a nationally ranked liberal arts college, giving students access to a pre-professional business curriculum alongside the broader liberal arts education the university is otherwise built around. The university's small size, fewer than 2,000 undergraduates, combined with its historic Lexington, Virginia campus and its consistently top-ranked national liberal arts college status, has made W&L a distinctive choice for students seeking elite liberal arts academics paired with a genuine undergraduate business degree option.
