Volvo Amazon
The Volvo Amazon, sold in the US as the Volvo 122, holds a specific and outsized place in automotive safety history: it was the first production car in the world available with a three-point seatbelt, an option Volvo introduced in 1959 shortly after safety engineer Nils Bohlin — hired away from the aerospace industry, where he'd worked on ejector seats — patented the modern Y-shaped design. What made that moment genuinely remarkable wasn't just the invention itself but what Volvo did with it: the company opened the three-point seatbelt patent for free use by every other automaker in the world, a deliberate decision to prioritize the technology's widespread adoption over any competitive or licensing advantage, reasoning that a safety innovation this significant shouldn't be gated behind patent royalties. That decision is credited with saving what safety researchers estimate to be well over a million lives in the decades since, as the three-point belt became standard, then legally mandated, equipment across virtually the entire global auto industry — arguably the single most consequential piece of automotive safety engineering ever developed, and one no other manufacturer had to pay a cent to use. The Amazon itself, produced from 1956 to 1970 and now viewed as a classic in its own right, is remembered today less for its performance or styling than for that one specific engineering choice — a reminder that a car's most important safety legacy sometimes has nothing to do with the car at all, and everything to do with what its maker chose to do with the idea.
VS
Honda Accord
The Honda Accord has been sold in the US since 1976 and across eleven generations has built a safety reputation less on any single dramatic innovation than on unusually consistent engineering discipline — the Accord has posted some of the strongest structural crash-test scores in the midsize sedan segment across most of its production history, generation after generation, rather than excelling in one redesign and regressing in the next. Honda's ACE (Advanced Compatibility Engineering) body structure, introduced across the lineup in the 2000s, was specifically engineered to better distribute crash energy in collisions between vehicles of different sizes and heights — addressing a real-world safety problem (mismatched bumper heights and structures between cars and taller SUVs or trucks) that isolated single-vehicle crash-test ratings don't fully capture on their own. The current generation Accord comes standard with Honda Sensing, a full driver-assistance suite including automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control across every trim level rather than gating the most important safety features behind higher-priced options — a decision that's helped keep the Accord among the more consistently top-rated midsize sedans in IIHS Top Safety Pick evaluations for years running. Built primarily at Honda's Marysville, Ohio plant — one of the longest-running Japanese-brand assembly plants in the United States — the Accord's specific combination of consistent structural safety performance and standard-equipment driver-assistance technology has made it, generation after generation, one of the most reliably safe mainstream sedans a typical buyer can purchase without paying a luxury-brand premium.
