Waiting for Guffman
Waiting for Guffman, released in 1996 and directed by Christopher Guest in his directorial debut, follows a small-town community theater troupe preparing an amateur musical production for the town's 150th anniversary, anxiously awaiting a rumored visit from a Broadway talent scout. The film established much of the improvisational, character-actor-driven mockumentary ensemble template that Guest continued refining across his subsequent films, including Best in Show and A Mighty Wind, and introduced several recurring cast members who became closely associated with his directorial style. Its gentle but pointed satire of small-town amateur theatrical ambition and provincial cultural pretension gave the film an affectionately mocking tone that balanced genuine comedic absurdity with a degree of sympathy for its characters' earnest, if misguided, artistic aspirations. Waiting for Guffman's combination of Guest's improvisational ensemble comedic approach and its specific, well-observed satire of small-town community theater culture established the foundational template for his subsequent, more widely celebrated mockumentary comedies.

What We Do in the Shadows
What We Do in the Shadows, released in 2014 and directed by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi, follows a household of vampire roommates navigating the mundane frustrations of shared living alongside their genuinely supernatural existence, filmed in a fly-on-the-wall documentary style. The film's premise, applying mockumentary's deadpan interview format to horror-comedy vampire characters rather than a more conventionally realistic subject, gave it a distinctive genre-blending identity within the broader mockumentary tradition established by earlier films. Its combination of genuinely well-executed practical horror and comedic effects with the vampires' recurring mundane household disputes over chores and social dynamics gave the film a specifically absurdist comedic tone distinct from more grounded mockumentary predecessors. What We Do in the Shadows' cult success led directly to a critically acclaimed television series adaptation, extending the film's specific blend of horror-comedy and mockumentary format into a sustained, multi-season creative franchise well beyond the original film's modest theatrical release.
