Walter Ray Williams Jr.
Walter Ray Williams Jr. has won 47 career PBA Tour titles, the most in professional bowling history, a record built across a career spanning more than three decades of sustained top-level competition on the tour. Williams also competed professionally in horseshoe pitching, a considerably less mainstream sport, winning multiple world championships in that discipline as well — a dual-sport excellence virtually unmatched among professional athletes competing at an elite level in two entirely unrelated competitive disciplines simultaneously. His nickname "Deadeye" reflected a reputation for exceptional accuracy and consistency under pressure, and Williams was named PBA Player of the Year multiple times across different decades of his career, reflecting sustained excellence rather than a single concentrated period of dominance. Williams's combined 47 PBA titles and his unusual secondary career excellence in horseshoe pitching have made him one of the most statistically dominant and genuinely unusual multi-sport professional athletes in American sports history, and his title total remains the standard by which other PBA Tour careers are measured.
VS
Mark Roth
Mark Roth won 34 career PBA Tour titles and is widely credited with revolutionizing bowling technique through his powerful, high-revolution "power stroke" delivery, a style that generated significantly more ball hook and pin action than the smoother, more controlled deliveries common among his contemporaries. His unconventional, self-taught technique was initially considered unorthodox by traditional bowling instructors, but Roth's sustained tour success throughout the late 1970s and 1980s proved the approach's effectiveness and directly influenced a generation of subsequent bowlers who adopted variations of his higher-revolution style. Roth was named PBA Player of the Year four times, and his combination of raw power and technical innovation made him one of the most influential stylistic figures in the sport's history, credited with helping usher bowling technique away from its more traditionally conservative delivery approach. His influence on subsequent bowling technique is comparable to a significant swing-change influence in golf, and Roth's power-based delivery style became the technical foundation that many of the sport's subsequent power players built their own games around in the decades following his prime.
