Waylon Jennings
Waylon Jennings was originally scheduled to fly on the small plane that crashed in 1959 and killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper, but Jennings gave up his seat to the Big Bopper, who was ill, a decision that haunted Jennings for the rest of his life and became one of the most significant near-misses in rock and roll history. His 1976 compilation album Wanted! The Outlaws, featuring Jennings alongside Willie Nelson, Jessi Colter, and Tompall Glaser, became the first country album certified platinum and helped formally establish "outlaw country" as a recognized commercial genre distinct from mainstream Nashville production. Jennings's insistence on creative control over his own recordings, rejecting Nashville's typically producer-driven studio system in favor of using his own touring band and choosing his own material, became a defining principle of the outlaw country movement's broader rebellion against the industry's established conventions. His combination of genuine creative independence from Nashville's studio system and his central role in outlaw country's commercial breakthrough has made Jennings one of the most historically foundational figures in the genre's development as a recognized commercial and artistic movement.
VS
David Allan Coe
David Allan Coe spent significant time incarcerated as a young man, and his outlaw persona, including his claim of having killed a fellow inmate during his imprisonment — a claim that's been disputed and never definitively confirmed — became central to his public mythology within the outlaw country movement. His songwriting for other artists, including "Take This Job and Shove It," recorded by Johnny Paycheck and later adapted into a popular film of the same title, established Coe as a significant behind-the-scenes songwriting talent beyond his own recording career. Coe's explicit, deliberately provocative public persona, including motorcycle gang associations and controversial album material, made him one of the most genuinely confrontational figures within outlaw country, pushing the genre's rebellious identity further than more mainstream-adjacent outlaw artists. His combination of genuine songwriting success for other artists and his uncompromisingly confrontational public persona has made Coe one of the most polarizing but historically significant figures within outlaw country's broader rebellious tradition.
