West Elm
West Elm was launched in 2002 as a furniture and home goods offshoot of Williams-Sonoma, initially operating as a catalog-only brand before opening its first physical retail stores in 2005, positioned toward a younger, design-conscious customer than its parent company's more traditional Pottery Barn brand. The brand built its identity around modern, mid-century-influenced design at a more attainable price point than high-end design retailers, and it became particularly associated with the specific aesthetic sensibility of urban apartment-dwelling millennial homeowners during the 2010s. West Elm's frequent collaborations with independent designers and artisans, along with its dedicated program sourcing furniture from local and fair-trade manufacturers, reflected an effort to differentiate itself through a more curated, socially conscious brand identity than mass-market furniture competitors. West Elm's combination of its accessible modern design aesthetic and its close identification with a specific generation's home style has made it one of the most culturally influential furniture brands of the 2010s.
VS
Herman Miller
Herman Miller, founded in Zeeland, Michigan in 1905, became one of the most influential furniture design companies in history through its long collaborations with pioneering designers including Charles and Ray Eames, George Nelson, and Isamu Noguchi, whose furniture pieces became modernist design icons. The company's Aeron chair, launched in 1994 and designed specifically around ergonomic research rather than traditional office chair aesthetics, became one of the most recognizable and widely imitated office chairs ever produced, eventually entering the permanent collection of New York's Museum of Modern Art. Herman Miller's furniture designs, including the Eames Lounge Chair, achieved a rare status as genuine design icons displayed in major museums worldwide while also remaining continuously in commercial production for decades, a combination few furniture pieces from any era have achieved. Herman Miller's combination of its historic design collaborations with legendary modernist designers and its museum-recognized Aeron chair has made it one of the most critically respected furniture brands in design history.
