Western Washington University
Western Washington University, founded in 1893 as a teacher-training college, has grown into one of the most selective and well-regarded regional public universities on the West Coast, consistently ranking among the top public master's-level universities in national surveys of undergraduate teaching quality. The university's Huxley College of the Environment is one of the oldest standalone environmental studies colleges in the country, reflecting Western's early and sustained institutional commitment to environmental science at a time when few universities offered dedicated degree programs in the field. WWU's Bellingham campus, set on a wooded hillside overlooking Bellingham Bay with views of the San Juan Islands, is frequently cited among the most scenic public university campuses on the West Coast, and the school's outdoor recreation-oriented student culture reflects its Pacific Northwest coastal setting. The university's deliberate focus on undergraduate teaching over graduate research, unusual for a public university of its size, has made Western a consistent top choice for Washington State students seeking a smaller-scale, teaching-focused public university experience as an alternative to UW's larger research-university scale.
VS
Whitman College
Whitman College, founded in 1859, is consistently ranked among the top liberal arts colleges in the Pacific Northwest, and its small size — fewer than 1,700 undergraduates — combined with a location in Walla Walla, a small city increasingly known nationally for its wine industry, gives the college a distinctive rural-but-culturally-active setting. The college's endowment per student ranks among the highest of any liberal arts college west of the Mississippi, funding need-based financial aid and research opportunities that let Whitman compete for top applicants against better-known East Coast liberal arts colleges. Whitman's Semester in the West program, an off-campus academic program that takes students on an extended field-based study of public lands and environmental policy across the American West, reflects the college's particular strength in environmental studies and its Pacific Northwest regional identity. The college's close faculty-student ratio and its reputation for sending a high proportion of graduates on to competitive graduate and professional programs have made Whitman the clear top choice among students specifically seeking a small liberal arts college experience within Washington State.
