Wichita State University
Wichita State University, founded in 1895, has built strong engineering and aerospace programs, reflecting the university's location in Wichita, historically known as "the Air Capital of the World" for its concentration of major aircraft manufacturers including Boeing, Cessna, and Beechcraft. The university's National Institute for Aviation Research is one of the largest aviation research facilities associated with any American university, giving Wichita State students direct access to industry-connected aerospace engineering research uncommon at most other public universities. WSU's business school and its health professions programs have built solid regional reputations, and the university's continued close ties to Wichita's aviation manufacturing base give its engineering graduates a particularly direct pipeline into the local aerospace industry's workforce needs. The university's specific strength in aviation and aerospace engineering, tied directly to Wichita's historical and continued significance in American aircraft manufacturing, has made Wichita State a distinctive choice among Kansas's public universities for students specifically interested in aerospace careers.
VS
Baker University
Baker University, founded in 1858, is the oldest four-year university in Kansas, chartered while Kansas was still a US territory rather than a state, and the university's small Baldwin City campus reflects its long history as one of the region's earliest institutions of higher education. The university's Methodist religious affiliation shapes aspects of its institutional mission, and Baker's School of Professional and Graduate Studies has expanded the university's offerings well beyond its traditional undergraduate liberal arts core into adult and professional degree completion programs. Baker's small size and its combination of traditional undergraduate liberal arts programs alongside professional graduate offerings reflect a broader institutional strategy common among smaller regional private universities seeking to diversify enrollment beyond traditional-age undergraduates alone. The university's genuine historical seniority as Kansas's oldest four-year institution, combined with its continued Methodist affiliation and its expanded professional studies offerings, has made Baker a distinctive if smaller-scale choice among Kansas's private universities.
