Wiley
Wiley, widely credited as "the Godfather of Grime," is considered by many genre historians to be the single most foundational figure in grime's earliest development, having produced and performed some of the genre's first defining tracks in the early 2000s East London scene that gave rise to the sound. His pioneering "eskibeat" production style, characterized by cold, futuristic electronic sounds distinct from the warmer tones of the UK garage scene grime evolved from, established much of the genre's foundational sonic template that subsequent grime producers built directly upon. Wiley's early mentorship of and collaboration with a young Dizzee Rascal, before the two later had a well-publicized falling out, reflected his broader foundational role nurturing much of grime's first generation of significant artists through his Roll Deep crew and independent record labels. His combination of genuinely originating much of grime's foundational sound and his direct mentorship of the genre's subsequent breakout stars has made Wiley the figure most universally credited as grime's single most important founding architect.
VS
Dave
Dave won the Mercury Prize for his 2019 debut album Psychodrama, structured as a conceptual therapy session addressing mental health, family trauma, and systemic racism, giving the young artist significant critical acclaim and commercial recognition immediately upon his first full-length release. His song "Black," directly addressing the specific historical and contemporary experiences of Black British identity, became one of the most critically discussed tracks of its release year for its explicit, unflinching engagement with British racial politics. Dave's technical rapping ability, combined with his willingness to address genuinely serious psychological and social themes within mainstream UK rap, distinguished him from artists more focused on straightforward party or battle-rap content, positioning him among UK rap's most critically ambitious contemporary voices. His combination of a Mercury Prize-winning conceptually ambitious debut album and his sustained willingness to directly address serious social and psychological themes has made Dave one of the most critically significant UK rap artists of his generation.
