William Trubridge
William Trubridge became the dominant figure in constant weight no-fins freediving, the discipline widely considered the sport's purest test of technique and breath-hold ability since it prohibits fins, weights beyond what's worn at the start, or any equipment assistance during the dive. His numerous world records in that discipline, set primarily at Dean's Blue Hole in the Bahamas, one of the world's deepest known blue holes and a location Trubridge helped establish as the sport's premier depth-record venue, reflected sustained technical mastery across more than a decade of competition. Trubridge's own facility at Dean's Blue Hole, which he helped develop into a dedicated freediving training and competition site, gave the sport one of its most significant permanent venues and helped establish the Bahamas as a genuine hub for competitive freediving. His combination of his sustained no-fins world record dominance and his role establishing Dean's Blue Hole as the sport's premier venue has made Trubridge one of the most historically significant freedivers in the discipline's history.
VS
Natalia Molchanova
Natalia Molchanova set more than 40 world records across her freediving career and is widely regarded as the greatest competitive freediver in the sport's history, male or female, dominating the sport's constant weight and dynamic apnea disciplines for well over a decade. Her technical mastery of breath-hold physiology and diving technique, combined with a training and coaching philosophy she developed and taught to numerous subsequent elite freedivers including her own son Alexey, gave her an influence on the sport extending well beyond her own competitive records. Molchanova disappeared during a recreational freedive off the coast of Spain in 2015 and was never found, a loss that shook the global freediving community deeply given her status as the sport's most accomplished and respected competitor at the time. Her combination of her unmatched record-setting competitive career and her foundational coaching influence on subsequent generations of freedivers has made Molchanova almost universally regarded as the greatest freediver in the sport's history.
