Willie Colón
Willie Colón became one of salsa's most important bandleaders and producers, releasing a run of genre-defining albums throughout the 1970s, first with vocalist Héctor Lavoe and later with Rubén Blades, that established the Fania Records label as the definitive salsa institution of its era. His trombone-forward arrangements, incorporating a rawer, more street-oriented New York sound distinct from Cuban son's more traditional instrumentation, helped define what became known specifically as the New York salsa sound, distinguishing it from earlier Afro-Cuban dance music traditions. Colón's subsequent collaborations with Rubén Blades, particularly the album "Siembra," produced some of salsa's most socially and politically conscious lyrical content, expanding the genre's subject matter well beyond conventional dance-floor romantic themes. His combination of his foundational Fania-era productions with both Lavoe and Blades has made Colón one of the most influential bandleaders and producers in salsa's entire history.
VS
Marc Anthony
Marc Anthony became the best-selling salsa artist of all time, bringing the genre's traditional big-band sound to mainstream commercial success during the 1990s and 2000s well beyond salsa's earlier core New York and Puerto Rican audiences. His powerful, technically precise vocal delivery, combined with lush, radio-friendly production on albums like "Todo a Su Tiempo" and "Contra la Corriente," helped modernize salsa's sound for a new generation of listeners without abandoning the genre's traditional big-band instrumentation. Anthony's crossover into English-language pop music, alongside his continued salsa recordings, gave him a rare dual mainstream and traditional-genre commercial standing that few other Latin music artists of his generation achieved simultaneously. His combination of record-setting salsa album sales and his role modernizing the genre's sound for mainstream audiences has made Anthony the most commercially significant salsa artist of the modern era.
