Woodford Reserve
Woodford Reserve operates from the Labrot & Graham Distillery site in Woodford County, Kentucky, a distillery with production history dating to 1812, and the brand relaunched under the modern Woodford Reserve name in 1996 after a significant restoration of the historic distillery facility. The distillery is notable for continuing to use traditional copper pot stills for triple distillation, a production method more commonly associated with Scotch whisky and cognac production than typical American bourbon, which usually relies on column still distillation instead. Woodford Reserve became the official presenting sponsor and namesake mint julep of the Kentucky Derby, one of the most prominent ongoing bourbon-and-sporting-event partnerships in the American spirits industry, closely tying the brand to Kentucky's broader bourbon and horse racing cultural identity. Woodford Reserve's combination of its historic pot-still triple-distillation production method and its official Kentucky Derby sponsorship has made it one of the most culturally prominent premium bourbon brands in the industry.
VS
Jim Beam
Jim Beam traces its distilling roots to 1795, when Johannes "Jacob" Beam began selling his first barrels of corn whiskey, and the Beam family has continued directly overseeing the brand's production across seven consecutive generations, an unusually sustained single-family involvement in American whiskey production. The distillery survived Prohibition by rebuilding its operations essentially from scratch after 1933 repeal, with James B. Beam, the brand's namesake, personally leading the postwar rebuilding effort at age 70, an accomplishment the brand has continued to reference in its own historical marketing. Jim Beam grew into the best-selling bourbon brand in the world by volume, and the company's ownership eventually passed to Japanese beverage conglomerate Suntory in 2014, combining one of America's most historic bourbon brands with one of Japan's largest spirits companies. Jim Beam's combination of its seven-generation continuous Beam family production lineage and its status as the world's best-selling bourbon by volume has made it one of the most commercially significant whiskey brands in history.
