Yahoo
Yahoo was founded in 1994 by Stanford students Jerry Yang and David Filo as a manually curated directory of favorite websites, originally titled "Jerry and David's Guide to the World Wide Web," before evolving into one of the dominant internet portals of the late 1990s dot-com era. Yahoo's portal strategy, combining search with news, email, and countless other services on a single crowded homepage, made it one of the most-visited websites in the world during the late 1990s, before Google's simpler, more effective search product began steadily eroding Yahoo's search market share in the following decade. Yahoo notably declined an opportunity to acquire Google for roughly $1 million in 1998 and later passed on a chance to buy Facebook in 2006, decisions frequently cited among the most consequential missed acquisitions in internet history as both companies went on to become vastly more valuable than Yahoo itself. Yahoo's combination of its pioneering role as an early internet portal and directory and its widely cited missed acquisition opportunities has made it one of the most historically instructive companies in the internet search industry's development.
VS
Ask Jeeves
Ask Jeeves launched in 1996, built around a distinctive natural-language search premise, letting users type full questions rather than keyword strings, represented by a butler mascot character named Jeeves who symbolized the service's promise of politely and directly answering user queries. The service's original approach relied significantly on a large team of human editors curating answers to anticipated common questions, a labor-intensive model that worked reasonably well for frequently asked questions but struggled to scale as effectively as algorithm-driven competitors as the web's size grew exponentially. Ask Jeeves rebranded simply as "Ask.com" in 2006, retiring its butler mascot and natural-language positioning as the company shifted toward a more conventional search engine model in an unsuccessful attempt to remain competitive against Google's continued dominance. Ask Jeeves's combination of its distinctive natural-language question-answering premise and its eventual rebrand away from that original identity has made it one of the more memorable and distinctively branded search engines of the early internet era.
