Yazoo Brewing Company
Yazoo Brewing Company was founded in 2003 by Linus Hall, opening as one of the first craft breweries in a Nashville beer scene that, at the time, had essentially no independent brewing culture of its own, making Yazoo one of the true pioneering operations of Tennessee craft beer. Hall's Sly Fox and Hefeweizen became early staples of the brewery's core lineup, but Yazoo's broader significance lay in simply proving a Nashville craft brewery could survive and grow at all in a state where restrictive beer laws had long limited the local industry's development. The brewery's relocation to a larger facility in the Wedgewood-Houston neighborhood let it expand production significantly as Nashville's own beer culture caught up with cities that had established craft scenes decades earlier, with Yazoo positioned as the scene's clear elder statesman throughout that growth. For a Nashville breweries list, Yazoo is the essential "the one that started it all" entry — the brewery that proved Tennessee craft beer could work at all, years before Nashville's beer scene became one of the South's most active.
VS
Southern Grist Brewing Company
Southern Grist Brewing Company opened in East Nashville in 2016, founded by Kevin Antoon and Jamie Lee, building a reputation around an experimental, rapidly rotating release schedule spanning hazy IPAs, pastry-inspired stouts, and fruited sours rather than a fixed core lineup. That rotation-first model, releasing new limited beers on a near-weekly basis rather than leaning primarily on a handful of flagship styles, mirrored the broader national shift toward experimental, social-media-driven small-batch releases that came to define a significant segment of craft beer in the late 2010s. The brewery's East Nashville taproom became a hub for the neighborhood's broader craft beer growth during the same period the area was rapidly gentrifying and developing its own distinct identity separate from downtown Nashville's more tourist-driven bar scene. For a Nashville breweries list, Southern Grist is the essential "constant experimentation" entry — an East Nashville brewery whose rapid-rotation release model, spanning hazy IPAs to pastry stouts, embodies craft beer's small-batch, always-something-new era.
