YouTube Music
YouTube Music launched in 2018, developed by Google as a dedicated music streaming app built to leverage YouTube's massive existing catalog of official music videos, live performances, covers, and remixes, a breadth of content unavailable through traditional audio-only streaming catalogs alone. The service was positioned as Google's eventual successor to its earlier and less successful Google Play Music streaming service, with Google fully migrating remaining Google Play Music users and their playlists over to YouTube Music by the end of 2020. YouTube Music's integration with YouTube Premium subscriptions, which remove ads from both the main YouTube video platform and YouTube Music simultaneously, gave Google a distinctive bundled value proposition compared to competitors offering music streaming as a standalone product. YouTube Music's combination of its unique access to YouTube's vast library of music videos and live content and its bundled integration with YouTube Premium has made it one of the most differentiated music streaming services in the industry.

Apple Music
Apple Music launched in June 2015, built substantially on the technology and catalog relationships Apple acquired through its 2014 purchase of Beats Electronics and Beats Music, marking Apple's pivot from its earlier iTunes download-purchase model toward on-demand streaming. The service integrates deeply with Apple's broader hardware and software ecosystem, coming pre-installed on every iPhone, iPad, and Mac, giving it guaranteed built-in distribution to hundreds of millions of Apple device owners without requiring a separate app download. Apple Music was an early adopter of lossless and spatial audio streaming at no additional cost to subscribers, a notable move in the industry since competitors had often reserved higher-fidelity audio for premium add-on tiers, and the service has continued to compete closely with Spotify for the position of largest global music streaming platform. Apple Music's combination of its origins in the Beats acquisition and its guaranteed pre-installed presence across the entire Apple device ecosystem has made it one of the most structurally significant music streaming services in the industry.
